PROJECT NARRATIVE

This tenant improvement was designed for a pharmaceutical spin-off developing therapies related to treating ischemia. For the user, it was important that the labs and offices maintain a modern, open feel while still meeting acoustic separation needs; the design team addressed this by removing the ceiling in the lab space and incorporating a series of small, glass-walled offices between the main office and laboratory areas, preserving a sense of openness and volume without compromising acoustic integrity. A shared common area was located in the corner of the building, making the most dramatic views accessible to the entire team, all within the constraints of a limited project budget.

Breaking down typical lab-office barriers was a central design goal. Shared desk spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows line the boundary between labs and offices, interspersed with full-height glass doors that let scientists work on reports and enjoy a cup of coffee while keeping an eye on lab bench experiments. The laboratory itself was placed along a window wall overlooking green space, with an open ceiling lending it a lofty, celebratory feel appropriate to the client's research-driven mission; floor-to-ceiling glass walls and doors further connect the lab visually to the office areas and an adjacent break room.

The client's existing brand identity, inspired by early experiments in electrochemistry, informed a material and color palette of soft neutrals punctuated by bold orange accents, Erlenmeyer flask pendant lights in the break room, and bright recessed strip lighting marking the entrance. To foster a culture of collaboration, the majority of the office area remains open, with desking, translucent screens, and sightlines into both the lab and the outdoor green space, balanced by a variety of enclosed meeting spaces sized for both large and small teams.
