Virginia Mason Sports Clinic Kraken Iceplex

PROJECT NARRATIVE
The clinic was developed to provide specialized sports medicine services in a highly visible, sports-focused destination adjacent to the Kraken Community Iceplex, an NHL practice facility. Designed for Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (now CommonSpirit), the approximately 5,000-square-foot outpatient clinic serves athletes, active individuals, and the surrounding community through an integrated model of care that combines primary care with sports medicine and physical therapy.
The team worked with the health system to create a modern outpatient environment that combines sports medicine, physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, and clinical support services under one roof, incorporating the health system's On-Stage/Off-Stage care model to enhance operational efficiency, improve staff workflows, and create a more seamless patient experience. The clinic includes seven universal exam rooms, a physical therapy gym, radiology, laboratory services, and associated support areas designed to accommodate both clinical care and rehabilitation services. Patient flows were developed through a lean process charrette using a patient-focused care model, with optimized space utilization, flexibility for future services, and collaboration across departments guiding the design.
The clinic's location offers convenient access via light rail, ample parking, and direct proximity to recreational and athletic facilities, capitalizing on the visibility and community presence of its setting near the NHL practice facility while supporting the health system's commitment to quality care. The design also extended beyond the clinic itself to include outpatient clinic design standards and brand integration work for the health system, reflecting a broader effort to deliver flexible, efficient outpatient environments tailored to sports medicine and rehabilitation services.
