Growing Access to Fertility Care
First Fertility recently joined a nationwide fertility organization with the goal of advancing its daily practice and incorporating state-of-the-art IVF procedures. The new 12,000-square-foot location in Thousand Oaks, California doubles the size of the practice's previous space and expands its service offerings. The design was driven first and foremost by the patient experience, with distinct pathways aligned to each treatment type so patients move through the clinic in a way that matches their specific care journey.
The interior concept, called “Roots,” drew on natural materials, organic forms, and warm neutral tones to create a space that feels calm and contemplative rather than clinical. Soft curves throughout the clinic support intuitive wayfinding, while architectural details reference First Fertility's brand identity, reinforcing a sense of trust and professionalism from the moment patients arrive.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
Reorganizing a Complex Footprint
The selected site presented an irregular, disjointed footprint that required the team to rethink workflow, clinical adjacencies, and departmental organization from the ground up. The resulting plan organizes clinical functions in one wing, shared patient and staff spaces at the center, and the IVF lab and ambulatory surgery functions in a dedicated zone, creating a cohesive patient and staff experience out of an inherently fragmented building.
CLINICAL PROGRAM
Supporting Care and Staff Well-Being
Clinical areas include exam rooms positioned in close adjacency to the phlebotomy lab, practitioners' offices, private consultation rooms, and an acoustically isolated area for male patient privacy. Ample staff areas give the team space to take a break, step out to a garden, and enjoy natural light that filters throughout the clinic. The surgical area incorporates procedure and transfer rooms adjoining a daylit recovery area with five pre/post-op bays.
LABORATORY DESIGN
The Embryology Lab at the Center
The embryology lab is often considered the heart of a fertility clinic, and the team designed this space with close attention to operational success, working directly with First Fertility's clinical staff to understand their priorities. The lab is situated in a secure area with no exterior door exposure, eliminating light and heat infiltration while maximizing security. Its direct adjacency to the andrology lab, procedure room, transfer room, and ambulatory surgery center streamlines workflow, maintains a sterile environment, and improves the efficiency of the mechanical systems serving the space. The completed lab also nearly triples the clinic's embryo storage capacity and includes a dedicated cryo room connected directly to the facility's medical gas systems.
Together, these improvements position First Fertility to serve more patients simultaneously, increase procedural throughput, and streamline physician workflows as the practice grows within its new national network. The clinic reflects a deliberate balance between clinical rigor and a calming patient experience, giving First Fertility the infrastructure to support long-term growth in fertility care.
