Advanced Orthopedic Associates Wichita MOB

PROJECT NARRATIVE
This 45,000-square-foot ground-up project provides enhanced clinic and administrative space for Advanced Orthopaedic Associates. The first floor houses an MRI, four X-ray rooms, a physical therapy practice, and a clinic space dedicated to orthopedics, with one pod serving as orthopedic urgent care; the second floor is dedicated to administrative offices. The physical therapy space is notably larger than the prior facility's, featuring a basketball court and a large turf portion for sports performance training.
The design emphasizes the kinetic movement of the body and how joints move, a concept carried through both the building's external form – two parts rotated six degrees from one another – and the environmental graphics throughout the lobby, which identify service portals using active imagery based on the human form in motion. The exterior's horizontal, planar aesthetic complements this theme, while the jointed building form also optimizes the patient experience by creating a central core with a single check-in station, replacing the disorganized check-in desks at the prior facility.
Inside, a hand-done exposed plaster veneer gives the lobby a raw, earthen look, and the waiting room's vaulted ceilings, clerestory windows, and natural wood accents create a sense of spaciousness while offering a visual welcome at a pedestrian scale. Extensive iteration around the clinic's layout throughout design and delivery helped reduce patient travel and minimize staff intervention.
