Stanford Valley Care Infusion Treatment

Stanford Valley Care Infusion Treatment

PROJECT NARRATIVE

This 11,000-square-foot OSHPD 3 tenant improvement aims to meet the growing need for cancer treatment in the Pleasanton area. The project increased the existing treatment bays from 14 to 30, significantly enhancing the capacity to provide infusion services to the community. In addition to this expansion, the project includes support spaces, a refresh of the existing infusion treatment area with satellite lab service, a minor expansion of infusion waiting, and a new separately located compounding pharmacy.

Despite not being involved in the initial layout or programming, the BA team successfully integrated hospitality elements and tunable lighting into the design. They devoted particular care to the design of the infusion bays, which are arranged in pods of four bays each and equipped with color-changing light fixtures that align with circadian rhythms. This innovative lighting design aims to improve patient experience by simulating natural light changes throughout the day, helping patients pass the time more comfortably during their 4-6 hour treatments.

Inspired by an aircraft's smooth, curved lines, the architecture incorporates pill-shaped light fixtures that evoke the feeling of being in a luxury airliner. To support these design choices, the team needed to thoughtfully negotiate Stanford's corporate standards and the preferences of end users to ensure the facility would meet both institutional guidelines and user needs. These impactful light fixtures, which the client initially considered eliminating, were retained thanks to effective advocacy and collaboration from the design team.
