Fred Hutch 1208 Eastlake Earl Davie Lab

PROJECT NARRATIVE
A 9,668-square-foot tenant improvement transformed a former vivarium into flexible multi-use laboratories and offices supporting Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Specimen Processing and Cancer Immunotherapy Trials Network (CITN) programs. The design team worked closely with both user groups to program laboratories, support spaces, and offices tailored to their distinct research needs, while converting infrastructure originally built for vivarium operations, including infilling a large rack-washer pit.
The shared laboratory environment was designed to foster collaboration between the two programs while incorporating specialized support spaces, including a large LN2 cryogenic freezer farm, mechanical support areas, and dedicated manufacturing space for CITN kit production. A secure entry and specimen drop-off area with pass-through access supports operational security and workflow efficiency, and mobile laboratory benches paired with quick-connect ceiling service panels give the space maximum flexibility as research programs evolve. The workplace component rounds out the program with an open office environment, private offices, a conference room, break room, restrooms, and locker facilities with showers.
Because the remainder of the building remained occupied throughout construction, phasing and coordination were critical to avoid disrupting ongoing research activity, resulting in a laboratory and office environment built to adapt alongside the science it supports.
